The document under study is an article extracted from Dazed magazine, published in 2023. It deals with digitally assisted eternal life. The method mentioned in this article to achieve eternal life is mind uploading. It consists in making someone’s mind digital make it immortal in a way. Therefore, all the memories, the personality and emotions of a person would be transformed into data uploaded to a computer. The benefits are that if something happens to your physical body, your memories would be saved. Moreover, it would be possible to choose another avatar as our mind may not be able to sustain without one. Nevertheless, we do not know if our mind is capable of adapting to a new shell. Besides, it is not necessary to create a perfect copy of our brain as just being able to make it function properly is enough. To conclude, it sounds like a fascinating project because it highlights the idea that someday we could transcend human physical limits.

The document under study an email written by a student called Tim. He tells about a typical school day. He comes from an English-speaking country but it is not explicitly said. He is writing an email to a French penpal/penfriend. We learn that Tim lives nearby his school as he only has a 15-minute walk to school. The celebration that should have been a tile for the nation to unite, we learn that Trump decided to create his own organization program through Freedom 250 in contrast to America250 that had been organized 2 years ago by Congress. Moreover, we can hear some patriotic statements: one lady says that she loves the president and the country saying it is the greatest country of the world. Furthermore, if there are people against the values or the image of the country they should leave. On the other hand, we can also hear political statements, with one man accusing Trump of polarizing the country: anyone who supports him shows their love to America, on the other hand, anyone who does not love him means that they hate America. Besides, Trump is trying to put his name of everything and he even succeeded in taking control over the celebration to make it his own benefits (Freedom 250).

To conclude, in a celebration such as Independent Day where everyone/every citizen should be united to enjoy this time, the country is deeply polarized. It was as if the president was trying to put people against one another.

In addition, we can hear political statements: a man is explaining that Trump is trying to put his name everywhere, that is seen as a form of high jacking. To conclude, the festivities were clearly divided among the citizens and even on the political base with Trump who decided to rebrand the celebration “Freedom 250” in contrast with America250 that had been organized by Congress 2 years ago.

The method used to extend life is digitalization of the human into a computer, humanoid or avatar. The benefits of such breakthrough are that one can live forever digitally and one can choose a new shell to keep on living in. Nevertheless, the risks are that it could be difficult to adapt in a non-human body. Indeed, we would lose our human senses and therefore our humanity. Eventually, scientists cannot achieve a perfect replica of the human brain.

This innovation seems to be a fantasy because they are not sure they could do it even if they wish it could become possible in the future.

It is about a scientific breakthrough that can make possible the uploading of the mind into a computer.  The method to upload a brain in a computer is to upload a replica of a brain that has its minimal functions. Then, the scientists will have to create hardware to give the subject the ability to think or imagine. Nevertheless, the potential risks could be that we do not know how the human brain will adapt to no physical form. One benefit could be to be able to choose another “shell” as a body (a robot for instance).

Nonetheless, this method does not seem realistic because we  would not have the same way of thinking and the same emotions as we can feel in our human body. Eventually, this type of innovation looks more like a fantasy than science.

Jesse Karmazin tried to turn the ancient myth of the “fountain of youth” into a modern business  by selling expensive young blood to old people (the name “Ambrosia” came from the Greek and Roman mythology. It was the name of the drink drunk by the gods). Eventually, his project was a failure and banished by the US government because it was potentially dangerous and fraudulent.

Indeed, this project raised ethical questions, on one hand, for donors: were they forced to give their blood? Could it be considered as child abuse? Could poor young people be pressured to sell their blood to the rich? Would they be ready to put their health in danger for money? On the other hand, for society: Does it create inequalities between people (the rich and the poor)?  Is it legal?

To finish with the medicine sector: Should we really use a cure that is not scientifically proven? Are the benefits worth the risk of dying? Should medicine be a luxury or fundamental rights?

America is fighting and strong nation with a powerful military system. Moreover, it is depicted as a country in advance in technology and innovations. It is seen as a creative country with brave people ready to sacrifice themselves for the well-being of the country and its population. Besides, America is depicted as a united nation where people are described as being lucky to live there. The tone of the voiceover highlights a strong patriotism. On top of that, the country is depicted as being better than any other countries in the world.

To build the country, they were inspired of England from which they picked out the common laws and the importance of freedom. Moreover, from Rome they picked out the Republican virtues. They also took some Christian values. In  addition, they also took democracy values from Athens.  

Americans like to describe themselves as a “Frontier Nation” because it has always liked to go beyond any limits to expand their sphere of influence in any fields (the conquest of the West, the Space Race, the Silicon Valley…)

On top of that, it is also represented as a country being superior than other countries. Indeed, it is described as a country being extremely in advance in science, astronomy, technology and military. In addition, they are shedding light on great American figures such as artists, athletes, scientists and politicians.

To write their constitution, they were inspired by different nations, such as Greece for democracy, Italy for power and bravery in wars and building new things. Besides, obviously Great Britain for some values add to their constitution as they were former British.

Being a “Frontier nation” means that Americans have always been innovative and not afraid to cross any limits (the West conquest and the Space race).

Similarities and differences with the French school system.

French and British students go to school with their backpacks on whereas American students are not allowed to have backpacks.

In French schools, 100% of the final grade are based on your exams unlike in American schools, 50-60% of your final grade are based on doing your homework or being present.

Regarding/Concerning summer holidays, French students have 2 months of vacation, as opposed to the British who have 6 weeks and the Americans have 3 months.

In French schools, all your grades in PE are based on your abilities contrary to American students’ grades, 30% of their grade are based on their outfits.

Similarities and Differences with the French school System

In American schools, they have cheerleaders unlike in French schools, the system of cheerleading does not exist. Moreover, in France students are not graded in participation or for their homework contrary to American students. British students and French students do not have lockers in their schools as opposed to American students. In American schools, students have 3 months of summer vacation as opposed to French students who have 2 months of summer. In American schools, they have 4 years of high school unlike in French schools, there are 3 years of high school. Moreover, in the USA, the school days are shorter so that students can practice activities offered by the school they want such as sports, drama, music, journalism, clubs… Whereas in France, French students have longer days and any activities are extracurricular ones, done in the evening most of the time.

To sum up on Karmazin’s idea and company, he tried to reverse aging by turn the ancient myth of the “fountain of youth” into a modern business by selling expensive young blood to old and rich people. Eventually, the government banished/banned his company as there was no scientific proof as it could be dangerous for people’s lives.

On top of that, his innovation raised several ethical questions: for donors, it raises the risk of child exploitation and child abuse. Indeed, young people could feel pressured and manipulated to sell their blood to the rich. For the society, the selling of young blood was part of the economy which was unethical eventually. Moreover, it raises another social issue as the selling of young blood would be for the profit of the rich only creating a biological divide. For medicine, the transfusion of blood should remain only to heal or help wounded people. It should not be used for cosmetic reasons.

The document under study an extract from a magazine called Popular Mechanics, published in 2024. It deals with how some scientists would use blood from young people to cure diseases or stay young.

For example, we have learned about a former Stanford Medical student called Jesse Karmazin who created a startup named Ambrosia. He promised that his blood plasma infusions could improve appearance, sleep, strength and even treat diseases such as Alzheimer. One infusion cost $8,000. It shows that this treatment was targeted at the elite, because these people want to look younger to maintain a good image. As a result, the FDA refused his experiment and put an end to his company because there was no scientific proof that it actually worked.

In history, people had already used young blood to cure or try to stay young. For instance, in ancient Rome, epileptics drank gladiators’ blood hoping to cure their disease. Moreover, Pope Innocent VIII drank the blood of three boys to survive his illness.

Alexander Bogdanov died because of his last transfusions at the early age of 54. It shows that the injection of young blood works only on a short term. However, they can destroy your health very quickly and could kill you.

To conclude, J. Karmazin refused to tell the source of the blood plasma he used because, on one hand the donors might have thought that it was for medical reasons and not for cosmetic ones. Moreover, it could create fights between parents and children because as minors, parents should decide for them and the children could be forced to do it, which is illegal, unethical and a form of abuse.

 Differences with the American and the British school systems.

The document under study is a video about the differences between the American and the British school systems. We have learned that in American schools, students have 3 months of summer holiday. As opposed to the British students, indeed, they only have 6 weeks of summer vacation.

Moreover, in American school, in PE (Physical Education) classes, students should wear the colors of the school to make sure to have 30% of their final grade. On top of that, American students are not allowed to have backpacks at school for security reasons, as a result they have to hold all their books with them. They have lockers in which they can leave their books. Contrary to British students, they do not have lockers and have their books in their backpacks. Furthermore, in the USA, they have nine classes. In addition, the grading (US) /marking (UK) system is different: in the USA, students just need to be present, to participate and do their homework to have a good grade. Shelley used the scientific idea of galvanism (the use of electricity to stimulate the muscles of a body). In her novel, doctor Frankenstein assembled/gathered body parts from corpses to create his creature. Eventually, upon seeing his creation, he felt disgusted and horrified. On the other hand, his creation is seen as a “monster” who ends up alone and eventually kills those Victor loves. Shelley’s novel serves as a warning against scientists “playing God” without considering the consequences.

To conclude, this document shows that immortality is a paradox. Indeed, as our humanity is tied to / linked to our finitude (the fact that we are all meant to die). The promises might be that one can live forever, however, the dangers are numerous such as boredom, memory loss, loneliness, unethical…

Her novel entitled “Frankenstein”, published in 1818 is about a scientist whose name is Victor Frankenstein who managed to spark life into a person he created out of body parts from corpses. Indeed, he used electricity to do so. Shelley was inspired by galvanism. This vision is overwhelmingly negative because Victor is eventually disgusted and horrified by his creation. On top of that, for the creature, it creates a lot of sorrow as he is rejected, and loneliness. In addition, the creature ends up killing Victor’s loved ones. Shelley’s message to the scientists is that one cannot play God without considering the consequences.

To conclude, immortality is a concept that is beyond the human’s mind. Indeed, the willingness to become immortal is too big for humans to master it. Our humanity is tied to our finitude as everyone is meant to die at some point.

Imagine the possibilities

The document under study is an animated video entitled “If you had the chance to be immortal would you take it?”. It was published in September 11^th, 2025 by Ted-Ed. It deals with the question of immortality. There are positive and negative aspects presented in the video. First of all, the positive part would be that we could live as dangerously as we wish without the fear of death. Moreover, you could get good at every skill you want. Besides, your body will be frozen at its current age therefore you will not grow old/age. Furthermore, you can explore the whole world by doing a world tour. In addition, you can practice dangerous activities. You can learn how to practice many instruments. To finish with, you could become immune to diseases. On the other hand, being immortal could mean that at some point life could be boring because you could find yourself in a boring loop. On top of that, this condition is irreversible, you cannot change your mind. You would forget your memories through the ages.

You cannot enjoy life properly because you would lose the worth of the moment. Besides, you may not have friends anymore as everyone would describe you as the “immortal one” and nothing else. These people may be jealous of you. In addition, you would not be able to understand people and people would not be able to understand you in return.

The document under study is an extract from CBS News published on July 2^nd, 2026. It deals with the time capsule that the American government created to celebrate America’s 250 birthday. It would be buried in Philadelphia, at National Historical Park on July 4^th, 2026.

Inside the time capsule, they put many things that represent modern America such as an iPhone 17 Pro Max, an essay from a high school graduate student. It was written by Alyssa Dalton. In her essay, she was addressing everyone from the Founding Fathers to the people in the future. Moreover, they added a whale bone. Furthermore, they put inside a pocket Constitution signed by the Justices from the Supreme Court. Besides, there is also a baseball line up cards. The Time Capsule

The document under study is an extract from a news report published on July 2^nd, 2026. It is from CBS Evening News. It deals with the time capsule created by the government to celebrate the 250^th Anniversary of America.

We have learned that it will be buried at National Historical Park on July 4^th 2026, and will be reopened in July 2276, on America’s 500^th birthday. Inside the Time capsule, there are objects that represent modern America such as newspapers, or anything that can give specific information on the current time. For example, inside they put a pocket constitution signed by the Justices from the Supreme Court. Moreover, there is a whale bone. Besides, there is an iPhone 17 Pro Max. On top of that, they also put poker/gambling chips from the state of Nevada. Moreover, there are artifacts from all the state. Eventually, they even added a letter written by a high school graduate, named Alyssa Dalton, addressing everyone from the Founding Fathers to the people in the future.
