Unit 4: Black Lives Matter (Tle G1)

The dismantling of the Black Lives Matter Mural in DC

The document under study is a video from KATV Channel7 released/published on March 11th 2025. It is about the dismantling of the Black Lives Matter Plaza in Washington DC that is situated close to the White House. The mayor of the city, Muriel Bowser, received pressure from the president’s administration forcing her to restructure the plaza and rename it otherwise, the city would lose federal funding. However, to defend her decision she had said that she already had planned to restructure the plaza before she was pressured to do so.

Furthermore, upon hearing the news, some citizens are sad, angry and disappointed. Some people even went there to pick up crumbles of the plaza to keep them as memories of the place. They do not see it as a restructuring but as a destruction.

Out of this moment, the mayor’s office still does not know what they will put on this plaza. They will simply rename it 16th street which was is original name.
