Unit 5: Conscious Art (1ère AMC)
Unhappily Ever After Series, Jeff Hong
The document
under study is an extract of a video of an interview of Jeff Hong, an eco-artist, published in 2014. Jeff Hong has been
an animation artist for 20 years. He worked at Walt Disney Feature Animation on
movies like Tarzan, Mulan, Hercules… Now, through his project “Unhappily Ever After
Series”, he wants to convey important
messages such the impact of climate change. He uses famous Disney characters by
placing them is situations where they suffer in order
to denounce global warming.
According to
him, people care more about the issues when they see their favorite characters
in difficult situations. Therefore, this way to
raise awareness is effective because these characters are supposed to live happily
ever after, but in his artwork, they are living in terrible conditions. It
speaks to the viewer because it reminds them of their childhood.
