Unit 4: Black Lives Matter (Tle G1)

(At the following of what we did last time)

To conclude, it is interesting to note that there is no federal obligation to teach it at school. As a result, black history is not taught at all in some states or it is badly taught: some facts about black history are not mentioned or properly transmitted. Eventually, some teachers even intentionally do not mention anything about black history to their students in some states, leaving students unaware of a part of American history.

The Making of a Black President

The document under study is a video entitled “The Making of a Black President” from the Atlantic YouTube channel, published in 2016. It is about Obama’s ethnic origins, his childhood and his doubts and certainty in regards of his candidacy for the presidency as a young African American.

We have learned that he comes from a mixed background: his father was an African man from Kenya and his mother was an American woman from the state of Kansas. During his childhood, he spent most of his time with his white family (grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins…). Therefore, he never doubt his ability to get white support to win the presidency. His only concern was that he was a young candidate.

(We will continue the study of the document nex time. Be ready!)

Homework: Learn the lesson.
