Unit 1: American Vibes (Tle G6_gr1)

How music helped win the American Revolution

The document under study is an extract from an interview broadcast on an America radio WRTI. We could hear three people, the first one was the host who introduces the topic. Then we could hear the voice of a woman, the journalist who was interviewing the guest of the day, a musicology teacher. We have learned that music was used on the battlefield during the war of independence (1775-1783) to motivate the soldiers. In fact, Americans used it as a secret weapon and as a military strategy.

Originally, the British soldiers had created a song that was made to make fun/ to mock American soldiers entitled “Yankee Doodle”. However, the American soldiers turned this song into a parody. Hence, they transformed it to make it their own and used it against the British. As a result, this song became the national anthem of the American Revolution. In addition, the American parodied other British songs such as “Rule Britannia” as a military strategy.

To conclude, Americans won the war thanks to their courage and audacity  that were reflected in their music on the battlefield.
