Met Launches “teen accounts” for minors on Instagram.

The document under study is an extract from a newspaper, Le Monde, published in September 2024. It deals with/is about the creation of teen accounts on Instagram.

Meta decided to change their regulations on Instagram because they were often accused of lacking of protection for the minor users on their platform. Hence/so/therfore, these new teen accounts are dedicated for minors between the ages of 13 to 17 years old. These accounts will only be launched on Instagram because it is the most popular social media platform among young people.

The new feature started to be available in September 2024 in the US, Canada, the UK and in Australia, before being available in the countries of the European Union. These features will be automatically imposed on the teen users.

Here is Tim’s typical day: he wakes up at 7 am, he gets ready, eats breakfast, then he goes to school at 8am.

Classes begin at 8.45am, and they finish at 3.25pm. Afterwards, he gets back home to chill and  complete his homework. Every Tuesday, he has drama club at school.

His compulsory subjects are English, science, math and PE (physical education). His optional subjects are geography, dancing and French.

 History of Rap Music

The document under study is an extract of a web article, entitled history of rap music. It deals with the birth of rap music. We have learned that it was inspired by West African musician who used to tell stories rhythmically with the beat of a drum. Moreover, they were inspired by folk artists from the Caribbean Islands who would tell stories in rhyme.

In fact, rapping is defined as a form of singing and speaking with rhymes to a beat. In addition, it is also seen as sophisticated poetry. Usually, rap songs deal with countercultural topics such as sex, violence, social and political tensions.

In the 1970s, it became popular among African-American teenagers. Then, in 1979, producers started to consider this music style and promoted artists. This was when the music style started to rise and became more and more famous. Afterwards, in the 1980s, there were more and more artists, even female artists and white artists became more famous. Furthermore, in the 1990s the music style matured, indeed, it went from simple lyrics to more complex ones. It was seen as an old-school style, of music. Nowadays, rap music is a thought-provoking musical movement which still exists thanks Jay-Z, Ludacris, 50 Cent…

 How music helped win the American War

The document under study is a recording of an interview broadcast on an American radio, WRTI, about the place of music during the war of Independence. We could hear 3 different voices: the first one was the host, a man, who introduced the topic. The second one was a female voice who was the journalist interviewing the guest of the day, a musicology teacher. We have learned that, the British were the first who used songs to ridicule/to mock/to make fun of the American colonists. Hence, the American soldiers took over the famous British song “Yankee Doodle” to make it their own and use it against the British soldiers. This song became the national emblem of the American Revolution.

Moreover, the American soldiers also took the song “Rule Britannia” and changed the lyrics with the words “to perish or to be free”. They wanted to show their audacity and their courage against the British soldiers.

To conclude, music was a real military strategy for American as they succeeded in gaining their independence from Great Britain. On top of that, the songs were also a musical analog of what was happening on the battlefield.

Originally, the British soldiers had created a song that was made to make fun/ to mock American soldiers entitled “Yankee Doodle”. However, the American soldiers turned this song into a parody. Hence, they transformed it to make it their own and used it against the British. As a result, this song became the national anthem of the American Revolution. In addition, the American parodied other British songs such as “Rule Britannia” as a military strategy.

To conclude, Americans won the war thanks to their courage and audacity  that were reflected in their music on the battlefield.

Advantages and obstacles of teamwork

We have heard about the testimonies of three students on teamwork. First of all, thanks to teamwork, we can make new friends. Moreover, we can come up with new ideas that we would not have thought about had we been working alone/if we were working alone. Furthermore, teamwork can improve self-confidence. On top of that, for shy people, it is easier to speak in a small group. In fact, teamwork teaches us valuable skills. However, some of the teammates may not listen to one another. Therefore, everyone should put in effort to communicate well. Besides, some ideas could be lost while communication and it could be frustrating. Plus, it could be difficult to get along with everyone in a group.

Advantages and Obstacles of Teamwork

First of all, teamwork is practical if a student is shy because they don’t have to speak in front of the whole classroom and they do not have to speak very loud. Moreover, teamwork is a good way to improve one’s confidence. In addition, it enables you to come up with ideas that you would not have thought of had you been working alone/if you were working alone. On top of that, teamwork helps to make new friends in the class. However, everyone needs to listen to each other if we want the team to function properly. Besides, it could be difficult to agree with one another (to see eye to eye) sometimes.

Is it possible to live without a mobile phone or any connected device nowadays?

Hey friend,

I hope my message finds you well. I would like to talk to you about a topic that has been in my mind lately that is the possibility to live without a mobile phone or any connected device nowadays. In my opinion, I think it is not possible because first of all, many administrative tasks have to be done online, sometimes we do them on our phones. Moreover, everybody is connected thanks to the Internet to everything. In fact, not having a cellphone can be a real social handicap. In addition, if you are confronted to an emergency, your phone will be the fastest way to warn someone and ask for help. To finish with, for us, as teenagers, we communicate together everyday via our mobile phones or on our computers through the different social media platforms. Eventually, all these connected devices belong to our daily lives and we cannot live without them.

-Smoke Signals: One of the oldest forms of long distance communication. Well-known from the Native Americans, but also in Europe, in Greece in 150 BC (Before Christ).

-Rock Carving: Prehistorical times with the cave men. In Europe in the ancient times.

-Ink and Paper: Around 1000, the invention of ink paralleled the invention of paper with the Chinese. The Egyptians, Romans, Greeks and Hebrews used to use papyrus and parchment paper. They used to use quill pen, feathers from geese, turkeys, owl, eagles, hawks, swans…
-Pigeon Post: Homing pigeons were used as tools to communicate from one place to another without limited distance. The pigeons were transported to a destination in cages, where they would be attached with messages. Then, naturally, the pigeons would go back to their home. They have been used since the 12^th century.  

Printer: 1434 by Joannes Gutenberg, with replaceable wooden or metal letters.

-Typewriter or writing machine: Invented in the 1860s. at first, they were for professional use for writers, journalists, secretaries… Then, people started to have one in their house for personal use.

Teamwork, a definition

Teamwork is when everyone is working equally in order to be more efficient in accomplishing a task. Besides, it is when all the teammates collaborate with one another. Everyone in the team should be reliable. It is also necessary to be kind with others and to be willing to help. On top of that, in a team, it is really important to collaborate and to communicate well.

Protest Songs

The documents under study are 3 short extracts from 3 international famous singers of the 60s and the 70s.

The first extract is from a song written by Bob Dylan, an American singer and songwriter, entitled “Masters of War”, released in 1963. He is protesting against the war in Vietnam and the American government (leaders and officials) that sent their soldiers to the frontline while they were staying behind their desks. Therefore, his goal was to raise awareness in the American society, to make people think about human rights and the uselessness of the war.

The second extract is from John Lennon’s song, a British singer and songwriter. This song was released in 1969, entitled “Give Peace a Chance”. He was denouncing police violence and social divisions. According to him, beliefs and religions should not be used to divide people. In fact, peace should be guaranteed regardless one’s beliefs and opinions.

The last extract is from Bob Marley, a famous Jamaican singer and songwriter who wrote “Get up, Stand up”, in 1973. He was protesting against injustice, oppression, poverty and racism. He was encouraging people to fight for their rights as human beings.

To conclude, in the 60s and in the 70s protest songs were giving a voice to social and political movements. They denounced the Vietnam War, racial segregation and social injustices. Music is a really good way to bring people together and fight for a cause, hence it helped a lot at the time.

In addition, they were seen as a threat to the society because their use of drugs could be influential to others. Besides, they were influenced by rock’n’roll music and by a man named Timothy Leary whom they made their leader. In addition, they were strongly opposed to the work ethic and had religion beliefs and would follow eastern philosophies that were unknown to Americans. In 1967, a large number of Hippies took over a district in San Francisco, Haight-Ashbury where they settled in during the summer. It was called the Summer of Love.

Eventually, reality hit when they had to go back to the real life and have a job to take care of their families, pay the bills… Therefore, it was a utopian world because their way of life was not feasible in the long run.

On top of that, they were taking drugs that was also seen as threat for the common good of the American society.

Besides, Hippies disregarded the norms of the American society by creating their own way of living. The most important event when the Hippies were mostly seen was in the summer of 1967 when they settled in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district, where they spent their time listening to music, spending time together… It was known as the Summer of Love.

Eventually, they could not be hippies forever because they were hit by reality when they had to take their responsibilities. Some had families to take care of, therefore, they had to have a job to pay the bills and so on… That’s how the movement ended, when they all had to go back to the normal life and follow the norms of the mainstream society.

Regarding the summer vacation, in France we have two months of break unlike the American students. Moreover, in France sport teams are not really important contrary to American high schools. In addition, we can say that out of the three school systems, only the American one students have lockers in their schools. On top of that, food served in cafeterias is not really healthy.  Besides, the timetables/schedules are different: in the American system, students finish earlier their school days as opposed to the French students.

Contrary to the French system, we have about 2 months of vacation in the summer. Furthermore, in France lockers are exceptional in high schools. In addition, like in the UK, there are no official sports teams. Unlike American schools where there are represented by colors and emblems, in France these do not exist. To finish with, in Great Britain, students have to wear a uniform to go to school whereas in France it is not the case.

 My Online Self

The document under study is an extract of an article published in The Atlantic in 2014. It is about modern self-portraits. In this article, the author is comparing and contrasting painted and digital portraits: both of them are made to describe, depict and represent someone. However, back then, painted portraits were used to make people look powerful, to display their wealth and to leave a proof of their existence. On another hand, digital portraits nowadays are for everybody. Digital portraits are made out of pixels. Furthermore, their goals are to find friends, find a job and stay connected to the world. They have had a big impact on our daily lives as everyone has an account on a social networking site: students, parents, politicians. Besides, there has also been an impact on our vocabulary some nouns became verbs: “to friend”. On top of that, not having an account on a social media platform can be a social barrier.

School differences between the UK and the US

The document under study is a video about school in the UK and in the USA. We can hear  Emma and Evan comparing and contrasting the two educational systems. We have learned that in America, students are graded on participation and it is worth 10 to 20% of their final grade. Unlike in Great Britain where a written test is worth 80% of their final grade. Moreover, in the USA, students cannot have a backpack and have to carry their books and store them in a locker because in some schools, they want to avoid students to bring a weapon. Whereas in the UK, there are no lockers for students. Besides, in the British system, students have 6 weeks of summer vacation, contrary to the American students who have 3 months, from June to September. On top of that, in American schools, sports is very important: football players and cheerleaders are very popular. Unlike in the British school system, schools do not have sports teams.

The Birth of the Hippie Movement

The document under study is an extract of a documentary entitled “Hippies Changed a Generation”, released in 2016 by Decades TV Network on their YouTube Channel. We have learned that the Hippie movement started in the 1960s in contrast of what was happening in the 1950s. In fact, in America, social conformity was the norm and everyone had to think like everybody else and had to dress the same way. Therefore, the young generation decided to rebel against their parents, the government and their main community and the mainstream society as a whole. Moreover, they were characterized as be opposed to the war, they were living in community. On top of that, they had long hair, they were wearing colorful and gaudy clothes. We could recognize them through their two symbols: the flower power and the peace one.

However, for the American government, they were seen as a threat for the American way of life because of their communal living style that was seen as communism.

 The Woodstock Festival

The document under study is an article published in 2019, in the San Diego Union-Tribune. It deals with the 50^th anniversary of the famous music festival: Woodstock.  This event was the most famous rock festival with young rock music fans. It took place in New York State in August 1969. Even though the weather was very bad (rainy and muddy), and there was a lack of organization as there were too many people attended the festival, everything went well.

The people present were very satisfied with the festival, especially the artists because for some of them it was the first time performing in front of such a huge crowd. Moreover, they all felt a sense of harmony and unity there despite the social and political tensions at the time. In fact, in that period, there were different sources of tensions in the country, such as the murders of JFK and MLK, the women’s movement and the rise of police brutality. On top of that, on the international level, there was the Vietnam War.

To conclude, according to the text, people felt touched and changed by this event that sanctified the union of Americans against violence and chaos. For the audience, this event had a big impact on their lives because it was a mythical and unforgettable experience.

 The Woodstock Festival

The document under study is an extract from an article published in the San Diego Union Tribune in 2019. It deals with the 50^th anniversary of the Woodstock Festival. Woodstock was known for being the most famous rock festival. It took place in a farm situated upstate New York in August in 1969. Almost 400,000 to 500,000 people attended this festival.

The festival was not well organized, it was raining most of the time, the ground was muddy, eventually, it was not that comfortable for people there. However, people at this festival felt like as if they belonged to same community united through music.

Woodstock is still remembered as an important event because despite the fact that at the time, there were social and political divisions, people were able to overcome them and gather around music.

To conclude, 50 years later, in 2019, a commemorative festival was organized to pay tribute to the very first one.

The Social Network, Trailer 2010.

The document under study is trailer for the movie “The Social Network”, released in 2010. It is about the creation of the famous social media platform Facebook.

We have learned that Mark Zuckerberg created this website with a friend when they were students at Harvard.

The reasons why they created Facebook were: first of all, to get the attention of the clubs because they were exclusive and it would allow them to live better lives and have better prospects in the future. Second of all, he knew that students would want to check out their friends pictures and profiles, therefore he wanted to capture the social experience of college into a website. As a result, the platform became popular as in two hours 22 thousand people visited it. It was projected to make millions if more billions.

Nevertheless, during the process, there were tensions between Zuckerberg and his friends. Eventually, the friendship broke. Zuckerberg was accused of having stolen the concept of thefacebook.com. Actually/in reality, some people wanted to make profit out of Zuckerberg’s idea. Besides, his best friend sued him for 600 million dollars. On top of that, Harvard university accused Zuckerberg of copyrights, intentionally breaching security and going against individual policy.

Above all, nowadays, Facebook is a very well-known social media platform that people use daily.

The document under study is trailer for the movie entitled “The Social Network”, released in 2010. The movie is about the creation of the famous social media platform Facebook.

We have learned that Mark Zuckerberg created the website with friend when he was student in Harvard.  The goal/purpose/aim was to live the experience of college online, to have fun. Moreover, to have the attention of the clubs because it can lead to a better life and have greater prospects and opportunities later in life. Nevertheless, people became too obsessed with the website, as they wanted more and more friends and likes. On top of that, there were tensions between the creators of the platform which led to a break up of the friendship. In addition, his friend sued him for having stolen his idea. Besides, other people wanted to make profit out of his idea. To finish with, the university of Harvard accused Zuckerberg of having breached security, violation of privacy and of copyrights.

Eventually, nowadays, Facebook is a worldwide application which is used daily by millions of users.

The document under study is an extract from an article, published in December 2010 in Time magazine. It was written by Lev Grossman. The main theme is about how the famous social media, Facebook, has changed people’s lives.

We have learned about the origins of this social media platform: Mark Zuckerberg is the one who created it. He was a student at Harvard at the time when he created a social network that was made to connect students on this campus in 2004. It was called “thefacebook.com”.

Then, the website became famous and spread through different American universities before hitting the whole wide world.

Therefore, in 2010, he was elected person of the year for creating a new system that  helped more than half a billion people to be connected.

Indeed, he created a new way to communicate with one another, with short and instant messages.

To conclude, Facebook has changed the way people communicate and our social relationships and interactions as it has become part of our daily lives.

Social Media Timeline

Our set of documents is composed of two graphs published in 2019 and one social media timeline, published in 2024.

We have learned that Facebook was created in 2004. Every year, there has been an increase of users. Nowadays, more than 2 billion of users are active on this platform.

According to these documents, the most popular social media platforms have been Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp and Instagram.

Generally, young adults, aged 25 to 29 prefer to use Facebook for their social interactions. On another hand, younger people, students, aged 18 to 24, prefer to use Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat. Unlike the older generation (aged 50+) who are using Facebook more than Snapchat. In fact, they might find Facebook as being more convenient to share personal information with friends and family. On top of that, it is easier to follow the news on this platform. However, Snapchat is mainly made to send instant messages that is more convenient for younger people.

Besides, Facebook was one of the first social networks that was created that is the reason why, the very first users are still using it nowadays.

The document under study is a trailer for the documentary « America’s Musical Journey », published in 2018. The viewer is led by the famous African-American singer and songwriter, Aloe Blacc, who travels through different cities where the music styles were born. Moreover, we can also hear Morgan Freeman, a famous African-American actor who narrates the documentary.

Music is special to America because America is a nation of immigrants, therefore multiculturalism created a collision of cultures that gave birth to new music genres. Music is also a way to reinforce American identity and heritage. Besides, it brings people together
