Unit 1: Brave New World (1ère AMC_gr2)

 Synthetic Human Embryos

The document under study is a news report from The World is One News, posted in June 2023 on YouTube. It is about a new breakthrough that consists in using stem cells to create synthetic embryos. In fact, this method bypasses the need for sperm and an egg to create an embryo. These synthetic embryos are analyzed in a lab for 14 days because it is the legal limit to study human embryos. In parallel, they analyze donated embryos to compare the evolutions.

The goals of this new innovation are to understand the very origins of human development, besides to understand better the period of the “black box”. Indeed, the “black box” period is situated from the 14th day of pregnancy to the 28th one, it is the very beginning of development of the embryo.

On top of that, this innovation is made to see if it is possible to have a living creature formed without sperm and an egg to live healthily.

Nevertheless, scientists tried this breakthrough on mice. They implanted synthetic embryos in female mice’s wombs/uteruses, eventually they did not survive.

Homework: Learn the lesson.
