Unit 1: Brave New World? (1ère AMC_Gr2)

 Gene Therapy

The document under study is an interview of an American scientist called French Anderson. He talks about a treatment he created called gene therapy that he used on a child called Ashi DaSilva, who was 4 years old at the time. In fact, Ashi had been sick since her birth because her immune system was deficient because of a faulty gene. Her disease was called ADA deficiency. As a consequence, she was always in quarantine at home to be protected from any viruses.

Then, she received a treatment called gene therapy. It consisted in taking her blood to inject healthy white blood cells from a donor. Then, it was reinjected in her body. As a result, 6 months later, she was healed/cured from her sickness. Indeed, when her family members were all sick/ill with the flu in bed, she was the first to recover.
