Unit 3: The Secret Road to Freedom (1ère G_gr2)

The Breathtaking Courage of Harriet Tubman

The document under study is an animated story about the famous abolitionist Harriet Tubman, published in 2018 on Ted-Ed YouTube Channel.

We have learned that she was born under the name of Araminta Ross in the early 1820s in Maryland. She had 8 siblings, she was the fifth child. Unfortunately, her family was separated because they were sold away to other slave masters. When she was a child, she was violently hit on the head with a bag of flour (2 pounds). As a result, she suffered from “sleeping spells”, narcolepsy. No slave masters wanted to buy her because of her health condition. She stayed with her father and two brothers. Her father taught her to lumber which enabled her to get physically stronger. Then, she could be in contact with free black sailors whom she could overhear them talking in a secret communication.

In 1844, she married a free black man named John Tubman and changed her name to be called Harriet Tubman.
