Unit 3: The Secret Road to Freedom (1ère G_gr1)
The Breathtaking Courage of Harriet Tubman
The document
under study is a biographical video on the famous abolitionist
Harriet Tubman, published in 2018 on TED-Ed YouTube Channel.
We have
learned about her life and career and how she became a symbolic figure in the
fight against slavery.
We have
learned she had 8 siblings, she was the 5th child. She was born
under the name of Araminta Ross. Unfortunately,
her family was separated because they were sold to different masters. She could
live with her father and two younger brothers. Unfortunately,
when she was a child, she was violently hit on the head with a bag of flour
(2kg). As a result, she suffered from “sleeping
spells”, narcolepsy. Because of that, she could not be sold to other slave
masters. Her father taught her to lumber that
helped her improve her physical condition.
In 1844, she
married a free black, John Tubman. She decided to change her name to Harriet
Tubman. She overheard about the Underground
Railroad thanks to black sailors who were talking about a secret code and routes
that would lead to the North.
