Unit 2: The Crown at a Crossroads (2nde)

Queen Victoria’s Impact on the British Monarchy

The document under study is an article from  the Museum of British Colonialism published in May 2023. It is about the reign of Queen Victoria.

She called herself “Empress of India” because India was part of the British colonies before gaining its independence in 1947. She was not only the Queen of the UK, but she also reigned over the countries of the British Empire.

On the one hand, she is described as self-declared anti-racist, humanitarian, loving and protective. On the other hand, she promoted colonialism saying the British civilization was the best model to follow for the rest of the world.
