Unit 3: The Secret Road to Freedom (1ère Générale)

The station masters were in charge of keeping the runaway slaves safe and hide them in their houses called “stations”: they were safe houses for the fugitive slaves.

The fugitive slaves would mainly go to the Northern states as they were free states, up to Canada.

Everyone was transported on the Underground Railroad: men, women and even infants!

Slave masters would hire slave catchers or bounty hunters to catch the runaway slaves. 

In order not to be easily caught by the slave catchers, the fugitive slaves would avoid the popular road watched over by the bounty hunters.
