Unit 3: The Secret Road to Freedom (1ère Générale)
(At the following of what we did last time)
The runaway
slaves would travel from the southern states (the slave
states) to the northern states (the free
states). To avoid being caught easily, they would avoid the popular
routes that would be watched over by the slave
catchers and pro-slavery sympathizers.
Everyone was
transported on the Underground Railroad to flee slavery: men, women, children
and infants. As a group they used a secret code to travel with them, they were
called “trains” or “wagons”.
Homework: Learn the lesson.
Complete the message of Harriet Tubman with the code of the Underground Railroad you received in class.
