Unit 2: No Thanks, No Giving (1ère G1_gr2)
(At the following of what we did last time)
Text C
This text is
an extract from a speech pronounced / made by Colorado Governer John
Hickenlooper in December 2014. In his speech, he apologized to the Native Americans
for what happened during the Sand Creek massacre.
In fact, in
1864 the Cheyenne and the Arapahoe Indians in Colorado were slaughtered and
persecuted by the American government.
The speech
was made in 2014, meaning 150 years after the massacre. Therefore, the speech demonstrates how long the US took to assume
their great responsibility in the genocide of the Native American community. Hence, it is a way to commemorate the dead in front of
the descendants.
To
conclude, nowadays the Native Americans observe a National
Mourning Day on Thanksgiving because their ancestors were persecuted and
mistreated for a long time. Now, they feel free to acknowledge their freedom,
their rights and shed light on the real
story. Besides,
it is also a way to show that they are still united despite what they ancestors
went through.
